January 2010
Cheyenne
How How from the Cheyenne Nation! We are Olivia, Alessandra, Lindsey, Madison and Rachel. We had a fun time this past month seeing the lights on Candy Cane Lane thanks to Adam, "Eagle Eye" Belsky! We also had a great meeting at Madison's house where we decorated cookies and made a picture frame craft. We're looking forward to the holidays and seeing each other again in the new year.
Chippewa
Happy New Year and How How from the mighty Chippewa!
We had a great time at the YMCA tree lot for our December
meeting. Guides made ornaments for the Christmas tree and
enjoyed the hot cocoa through the cold evening. We really missed
the Candy Cane Lane this year and hopefully will have it again
next year. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and look
forward to Pinewood Derby & Magic Night events.
Conejo Cubs
Last month we had the entire tribe at the Rosen teepee, where we made paper airplanes and sailed them from the second floor! Even though the Y bus got cancelled, the Veregges and Levines piled into the Pavone-bus and headed out to Candy Cane Lane. Ethan, Matthew, Mark and their siblings enjoyed candy canes while taking in the lights. The next day, Benjamin, Matthew, Ben, Ethan, and their Dads helped out at the YMCA Christmas Tree lot. The kids made ornaments and drank hot cider. Matthew and Ryan are looking forward to going to Knotts Berry Farm this weekend. We are all looking forward to our meeting this month at the Lieberthal teepee!
Dakota
The Dakota Tribe has had a busy fall with camping, bowling and tribe meetings. We started off at Fall Camp with Emily, Chloe, Bella, Isabela and Maddie. Between campfires with Smores, a mermaid sand castle and tie-dying, everyone had a great time. Next up was a great tribe meeting at Isabela's house where we welcomed our newest tribe members Joe & Emma! After sharing what everyone wore for Halloween we all crafted door hangers and Jose read a story about the new Olympic mascots for the upcoming games in Vancouver. Cosmic Bowling was a blast & all the girls showed why they are ready for the PBA! We are all looking forward to Candy Cane Lane and the Pinewood Derby.
Makah
Another great time for Makah tribe. Big event was the bowling day where the kids got a chance to let their muscles flex. Unfortunately for the hardwood floor some balls got launched shot-put style and landed with a loud thud on impact, opposed to the rolling action balls usually follow.
A mix-up in admin plans caused the dads to not be able to bowl but we had a great time watching our sons. Scott Wenguer took enough pictures to qualify as paparazzi and there were quite a few great moments including an occasional spare. Aidens, Alden, Trevor, Jake, Cooper, Joshua and Parker wish all our fellow Indian Guides a very merry holiday season and Happy New Year.
Tonkawa
November certainly was a month to be thankful for. Red Fox and Brave Cobra sponsored our monthly powwow. The boys elegantly spoke about all of their “good deeds” including recycling and toy donations. We are very proud of our little braves for their efforts in making the world a better place. The boys also made designer mugs and filled them with hot chocolate and whipped cream. Cosmic bowling was awesome and the boys had their best time ever. (Perhaps that comes with age.) As this is being written we are just a wee short hours away from our December gathering, which will take place at the Christmas Tree lot in Agoura Hills. Mmmmm….fifth night of Channukah at a Christmas tree lot, you gotta love it. Happy New Year to all!
Papago
The Papago Nation has done it again – another successful month of events
centered around the daughters and their dads. The monthly Night of the Papago, hosted by
Princess Sara and her father, John, featured a holiday themed craft – gingerbread houses. After
celebrating a meal together, the girls (with help from their dads) each adorned their own
gingerbread house with all sorts of sweets and candied goodies. Delicious! The tribe also
observed its traditions of story time, the wampum circle, and closing ceremony, among others.
The Papago Nation capped off 2009 with a trip to the YMCA tree lot, and several
of its member families participating in the YMCA’s Jingle Bell 5k foot race. Way to go,
Papagos!
Dakota
Dakota’s plans to visit the tree lot had to be changed at the last minute when Mother Nature decided to send us some rain and cold weather. Luckily Adam and Bella came to the rescue and had December’s meeting at their house. We discussed what we did for Thanksgiving, and started talking about Winter Camp. For our craft the girls used special beads that were ironed together by Adam.
Everyone was very excited about the holiday and the upcoming new year, especially pinewood derby and winter camp!
December 2009
Atakapa
How How from the Atakapas! We have a terrific tribe this year, with many girls and dads returning from last year and with the addition of a few new faces. All the girls are good friends and they’re having great fun spending quality time amongst themselves and with their dads. We had a very good turnout at Fall Camp at Leo Carrillo Beach. Although most girls disbanded throughout the day on Saturday to attend soccer, dance, or theatre, everyone regrouped Saturday night for a great dinner, campfire and ‘smores with friends. On Nov 14 we had a terrific turnout for bowling, and we witnessed an impressive display of athletic abilities, as multiple strikes were had by many girls! We’re looking forward to the Holidays and our tribe’s activities in the New Year, and we wish everyone ‘Happy Holidays’!
Papago
Once again, the Papago Nation continues to thrive in the Fall of 2009. The girls enjoyed a weekend of hiking, biking, and beach camp fun at Leo Carrillo Beach State Park in late October. The talented Princess Bebe and her father “Jeff The Chef” kept the entire tribe well fed. The weekend menu featured such classics as homemade neopolitan ice cream, sugar donuts made from scratch, and pork roasted in a traditional Hawaiian imu (underground oven). Incredible! The monthly Night of the Papago, hosted by Princess Christy and her father, Curt, featured a Thanksgiving themed craft – picture frames the girls each decorated to display a group photo of the tribe. After dining together, the tribe honored its traditions of playtime, the wampum circle, and closing ceremony, among others. The Papago Nation capped off November with Bowling Day, and several of its member families participating in the YMCA’s Turkey Day Dash on Thanksgiving Day. Keep it up, Papagos!
Ventureño
The Ventureños hanged ten at their totally tubular beach blanket bingo bash at Leo Carrillo over the weekend of October 23-25. Anna, Bryanna, Caroline, Carsten, Cassidy, Chloe, Claire, Elise, Isabella, Natalie, and Sabrina built a “hot tub” in the sand, tie-dyed some radical shirts, crooned the Aroostasha by moonlight, and dug some cool songs with Grampa “Fleetwood” Dave and Sergeant Garry on guitar. A week later, all the ghostly girls and boys floated down to Elise and Cassidy’s haunt for a supernatural shindig to party scary for Halloween. And on November 14, Sabrina, Isabella, Elise, Chloe, Carsten, and Anna bowled better than the Big Lebowski! (The Venturenos do roll on shabbos!) Next up: MB2 Raceway, Candy Cane Lane, and a holly jolly holiday party at Sabrina’s house – happy holidays to one and all!
Kiowa
The Kiowa continued the year strong with a monthly meeting that was two weeks prior to Halloween that included all the boys carving their own pumpkins! We had some true masterpieces but the best was to see how the boys truly enjoyed cutting up those pumpkins!! We had nearly 100% attendance to Fall Camp and everyone had a fantastic time! Thank you Rod Francisco for being a truly professional camper with your traveling kitchen!! There have been a few “one-off” events that have included a scavenger hunt, “Fangs & Football” Halloween Get-Together & attending a local high school football game. Kiowa is truly going to make our third and final year the best!!
Tonkawa
After a very successful ‘rush’ event our tribe has grown to ten little braves. (Is that a counting song?) We had an amazing October meeting. Silver Drum hosted as we celebrated Corth’s birthday at Chuck E. Cheese. We welcomed the Spellerbergs into the tribe. The boys had an incredible time using up valuable tokens to trade for the unbelievably useless plastic trinkets. (We wanted to simulate the deal that the Manhattan Natives made with the colonists.) In lieu of gifts some tribe members made charitable donations in Corth’s name. (Although they used his real name for the donation forms.) We look forward to cosmic bowling and whatever 2010 will bring our way. How How!
Chumash
The Chumash tribe, a new Kindergarten tribe, has held its first two tribe meetings and attended our first Fall Campout. At our first meeting we chose a tribe name, Chumash as an honor to the local natives in this area. We discussed their significance with the boys. We also shared our Indian names and created/decorated our lanyards and decorated our tribe's talking stick. We helped each other set up our campsite and our tents and enjoyed s'mores over a campfire while some tribe members performed songs and dances around the campfire that they had learned at school. We also enjoyed exploring and hiking around the beach as well as climbing trees, playing ball and tag and looking up at the stars. The low tide in the dark was exciting for the boys as we captured and released some local crabs. At our second tribe meeting we shared some of the nice things we did for others during the previous week. The Thanksgiving holiday its significance were discussed. We made plans for the next meeting and tribe activities. We made crafts and decorated cards for Jack who was in the hospital with pneumonia, now doing much better.
Ponca
The Ponca Princesses had a fantastic Fall Camp as they unveiled their monumental Ponca totem pole. Towering at almost 12 feet, the totem pole is destined to become the symbol of Ponca hegemony and perseverance in the realm of Dooehdom. Under the auspices of Sir Leaf-a-lot, the girls enjoyed the incredible beach weather, the famous Ponca Princess Pasta, mountains of gooey smores, the ever-popular and bone chilling ghost story campfire circle, the chocolate pancakes and overall camp cheer. Dads enjoyed sharing their many tales of “the Doo’Eh,” Leafdom, the famous brittle Canadian maple leafs, and, of course, the Great Fire Poker (which was the item next to the billboard with the neon signing saying “I’m the Fire Poker”). Next, the Princesses enjoyed rolling bowling balls down the wooden lanes at the Woodlake “Cosmic” Bowl. What a difference a year makes as the all of girls continue to rack up higher and higher scores! “Doo’eh, Doo’eh!”
Makah
Amazing location and weather welcomed Makah tribe to fall camp. First arrivals were Aiden Goldey and Cooper Kraines along with dads Ian & Adam, boys tested their tree climbing skills while dads setup tents. We were soon joined by Rod & Aiden Francisco, Paul & Trevor Chen. The boys broke out their razors to form a rather ominous looking gang of two-wheel rebels, while Dad’s worked on camp and help unload the fantastic grill brought by Brian & Joshua Rabinovitz. Billie had satellite phone ready for the alert of expanding his tribe, the date was a actually Oct 28th when baby Ethan Phillip was brought into the world. A big How How to Aidan Friedman for his new brother. We all had a great time at Movie Night with lots of laughs. (thanks YMCA AV team). There was lots of fun either in camp making rubber-band powered planes brought by Greg & Jake Johanson or eating smores that were freshly made over our campfire. Keith Bernstein and his son Aldan lead several of Makah tribe on a brief hike around camp perimeter until we had a panoramic view of ocean. We kept having fun with activities such as tie-dye, pumpkin carving or just hanging out preparing meals and eating together. Scott & Parker Wenguer led Makah to the ocean campsite where we met all the other tribes; it was certainly a great way of ending a excellent day.
Conejo Cubs
Fall Camp was the highlight of our October, as the entire tribe attended, some in between soccer games. The boys had lots of fun playing on the beach, making sandcastles, climbing the rocks, tie-dying shirts, making smores, and getting stuck in trees. For Spring Camp, however, we have vowed to get some sites with shade, as we could not escape the sun in any of our campsites. Our October meeting was at the Tores teepee, where the boys enjoyed pizza, playing with Ryan’s toys, and playing financial word games. In November, Ryan, Benji, Max, Ben, Dillon, Matthew, and Mark had a great time at the bowling event. The boys showed a variety of interesting bowling styles, from a two-handed side launch with a twist, to a two-handed shot-put. Dad Alan Tores gets he prize for the high-speed throw, while guest star Scott took the award for the slowest, with a 1.6 mph crawl down the lane. David Lierberthal was credited with best use of the bumpers. We look forward to the November meeting at the Rosen teepee.
Tatanka
The Tatanka tribe is a new tribe of 1st Graders made up of four members; Zac Anderson, Ryan England, Declan Farriday & Nathan Prince. We had our “Kickoff Meeting” on October 13th at the Lamppost Pizza off Kanan & Lindero Canyon. We got to know each other over pizza & Halloween crafts. We had 100% showing at Fall Camp and had a great time! Thank you Kiowa for allowing us to share meals (and Rod’s kitchen!!)!! We are continuing to meet and are gearing up for future events of Bowling, Candy Cane Lane, the Pinewood Derby & Winter Camp. We’re all looking forward to all the good times to come!!
Inca
HOW! HOW! The Incas had a great time at Leo Carillo for the Spring campout. Since then we have been meeting and preparing for upcoming events. Our last meeting was at the home of Benjamin and Alan Allgeier. We were updated about Candy Cane Lane and the Pinewood Derby. Benjamin and Alan had a great activity planned for us! The boys all got to make their own Indian Headress! After that we had cookies, juice and water. Thanks to Benjamin and Alan for a wonderful time! Our next meeting will be at the Triunfo Y’s X-Mas Tree Lot at Kanan and Old Agoura. Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!
Dakota
The Dakota Tribe has had a busy fall with camping, bowling and tribe meetings. We started off at Fall Camp with Emily, Chloe, Bella, , Isabela and Maddie. Between campfires with Smores, a mermaid sand
castle and tie-dying, everyone had a great time. Next up was a great
tribe meeting at Isabela's house where we welcomed our newest tribe members Emma and Joe. After sharing what everyone wore for Halloween we all crafted door hangers and Jose read a story about the new Olympic mascots for the upcoming games in Vancouver. Bowling was a blast and everyone had a great time. We are all looking forward to Candy Cane Lane and the Pinewood Derby.
Chippewa
How How from the mighty Chippewa! This year has started off great. We have an amazing tribe of 8 Guides and 7 dads. We had a great time at Fall Camp, the boys enjoyed the Scooby-Doo movie, Tie-dying,
making sand castle, campfires and smores. Shayaun,
Ryan, Landon, Brandon, Justin, Max and Wesley had
a fabulous time with all beach activities. We had a great
Nov. meeting at Shayaun’s with all dads being busy
helping the Guides on wood model kit project. Another
awesome time at Cosmic Bowling, where the guides were
competing against dads with lots of unexpected strikes
but it was a tie score. The Guides are looking forward to
upcoming Candy Cane Lane journey. Finally, a warm
welcome to our newest tribe members Max and Mike.
